Commodore’s Call

April 2020

COVID-19

Hope you are keeping safe during this difficult time. As you are no doubt aware people are encouraged to say at home other than for essential actives and exercise, where social distancing is required. As a result, sailing activities can only be performed for exercise and with social distancing (which is impossible) unless only immediate family (where you all live together) are involved. So clearly organised racing is out. Public gatherings are also very restricted and as a result, the following club activities have been postponed:

Sailors Meeting                                    set down for                         5 Apr                      Postponed

Monthly Club meeting                        set down for                         9 Apr                      Cancelled

Winter Sailing                                       set down for                         2 May                     Postponed

Sailing Club Presentation                   set down for                         23 May                   Postponed

New WASC Constitution

Thanks to all those who responded to the request for feedback. Your comments will all be taken on board to try and make sure we have a workable and fair constitution for all moving forward.

Next Season’s Sailing Calendar

Normally the Sailor’s Meeting is the opportunity for sailors to give feedback and suggestions to improve next season’s sailing program (calendar, SI’s etc), however this has unfortunately been postponed.  There is no rush at this stage to hold this meeting, as it is preferable to hold this face to face, however it would be a good idea for you all to start thinking about possible changes and improvements.

Ladies Day Race

This was the last official function at the club before COVID-19 effectively shut us down. It was a very light breeze which seem to pick up after we were all finished however the ladies all had a great time. Lynne Harding lead the fleet home in “Wanmei” however we agreed that everyone won on handicap. Funds raised will go to Ovarian Cancer Research.

Lunchtime Cruise

The Sailing Club held a luncheon earlier in March at Gwandalan Bowling Club. Some went by road and some by water. Food was great as was the company and even the weather was kind to us. Thanks to the social committee for organising it all.

Friday 13th

Thanks to our resident Chef, and Yacht Club Captain Steff, and his supervisor Trish for organising the get together after sailing on Friday 13th where we were treated to slow cooked Mediterranean Lamb with trimmings on hot dinner rolls. Everyone had a great evening as they swapped sailing stories.

Sabot Coaching & Wangi Regatta

Our club hosted Sabot Coaching Day on Saturday 14 March and a Regatta on the Sunday. Unfortunately, on‑water activities had to be cancelled on Saturday due to bad weather, however training continued on the shore. Many thanks to Scott Day and his team of junior parents for hosting a very successful event over the two days.

RKR Inter Club Yacht Series

I am pleased to announce that WASC has won the overall teams prize in this interclub event. Only 5 of the 6 races held during the season were completed due to bad weather, however WASC boats filled the top 4 overall places out of the 103 boat fleet. The Winners were: 1st Snappy One, 2nd Wanmei, 3rd Valkyrie, 4th 2EZY.

Reminders

Stay Safe                             Wash your Hands                             Maintain Social Distancing

Hopefully we will all get through this together and will be back on the water soon.
