Commodore’s Call November 2020

We now have 43 different yachts entered in various race series within the Wangi club this season. Top of the list surprisingly, is the Interclub series with 23 boats, followed closely by Friday twilight with 22, the Saturday Scratch Start series and the Saturday Pursuit series both have 17 boats and the Wednesday twilight series has 6 plus a couple of casuals. The Junior Sabots have only just started racing and have a fleet of 16 boats possibly with more to come. On top of this, the “Learn to Sail” program has had so much interest that we have had to run 2 programs with one starting at 8am on Sunday morning followed by a second group starting at 10am. These numbers have continued to grow over the last couple of years which is largely due to the hard work of all the volunteers within the club and is extremely pleasing to see, as a lot of other sailing club are experiencing declining numbers. Well done all.

Membership & COVID Logging

Great to see all sailors logging on using the COVID QR code, however, just remember it must be done on the day of the race (not before) and applies to all races including twilight races.

As you should recall, all people on boats that are racing, including twilight races, need to be a member or have a valid Sail Pass. The Wangi Sailing Club offers an extremely low adult membership fee of $50 for the year which includes valid Australian Sailing membership number and as a result it is very pleasing to see how many people are taking advantage of this and joining the club.

Thursday Boys do it Again

Big thanks to Garry Luxton and his team of Thursday boys, who in addition to regular maintenance at the club, have been able to get the motor on the Red RIB overhauled and fixed in time for the Learn to Sail Program.  If anyone has a couple of hours to spare on a Thursday morning, I am sure the boys would welcome some assistance.

Learn to Sail

The “Learn to Sail” kicked off this Sunday with a big role up of young kids and supportive parents. Jason Dean has done a great job organising the program and has recruited an enthusiastic team of young coaches to run each session.

Up Coming Regattas

In order to keep our fees to members low, the club depends on generating fees by running regattas. To that end, we have a fairly busy month ahead of us with the following regattas at Wangi:

            7 / 8 Nov                      OK States

            21 / 22 Nov                 29er, 49er, 49erFX & Nacra 15 & 17 States

5 / 6 Dec                      Moth Super Cup Regatta

I am hoping that some of the Junior parents could help out on the Saturdays and the Yacht Sailors could cover the Sundays.  If you are able to assist, please let me know. Thanks Tony Outteridge 0423 521 551
