Commodore’s Call March 2021

We had quite a lot happening last month including:

  1. She Sails Regatta: RMYC hosted the “She Sail” regatta on Sunday 14 of February for any yachts helmed by a female. A fleet of 22 yachts raced, including 6 from Wangi. In a 20 to 25 knot Southerly, the girls did a great job and all boats finished. Congratulations to Kimberly Russell in “Foxy” who finished first and to Emily Fatches on” Cool Change” who came 3rd overall.
  2. Heaven Can Wait Yacht Race:8 Wangi yachts competed in the “Heaven Can Wait” last month. Unfortunately, the weather was not ideal, as the breeze was really light and the race had to be shorten at the bottom end of the lake for those boats in the “One Lap Dash”  Congratulations to Peter Horne and his crew on “Bling” who were our best placed boat with 2nd overall in Division 1.
  3. Lake Fest Twilight Race: On the last Friday in February Wangi Club hosted the combined twilight race with LMYC boats as part of Lake Fest. At the end of the race the club put on a sausage sizzle in the beer garden of the RSL for the sailors which was great. Big thanks to the organisers, cooks and helpers
  4. Windward Leeward: This Inter Club series consisted of 3 different days racing, in which the boats were split into 3 separate fleets, which in turn were rotated between Wangi, RMYC & LMYC. Congratulation to the Wangi Race Management team headed up by Phil Mayo, who did a very professional job. Congratulations too to Garry Luxton and his crew on “2 EZY” who were the best placed Wangi boat coming 1st overall in Blue Division.
  5. Cruise Lunch: Last Sunday a number of WASC members had a lovely lunch at the RMYC at Toronto. It was a great opportunity to sail around to Toronto for lunch, as the weather was perfect, as was the food and the company.

Up Coming Events:

  1. The inter club RKR series concludes next Saturday (13th) with a number of Wangi boats well in contention. Good luck to you all.
  2. The club’s Learn to Sail Program will be finishing for the season next Sunday. Once again it has been quite a successful program, thanks largely to Jason Dean as coordinator, his team of coaches and all of the supportive parents.
  3. Twilight Sailing finishes at the end of the month inline with Daylight Saving stopping, however the last Friday night pointscore race is actually on Friday the 19th, as the following Friday is a non pointscore crew’s race where a crew member is required to steer.
  4. Ladies Day is on Sunday 21st of March. It will be a non-spinnaker race starting at 1.30pm. Ladies are required to steer the boat and as many ladies as possible are encouraged to be part of the crew. Further details will be forwarded later regarding both on water and off water related social activities
  5. Sailors meeting for yacht sailors is scheduled to be held on Sunday 28th of March at 10am in the clubhouse. If you have any specific items you would like to raise, please let me know, so that I can put it on the agenda.
  6. Youth Sail set down for Sunday 14 March has been postponed until late May when it may serve as a lead up event for the Sabot Nationals which are scheduled in the middle of the year in Nth Qld.
