Commodore’s Call

March 2020

Sail GP

The first round of SailGP concluded on the weekend in Sydney. Congratulations to the winner, Team Great Britain and especially to Wangi Sailing Club member Iain (Goobs) Jensen who was their wing trimmer. Other local sailors who did well was Kyle Langford the wing trimmer on Team Australia who finished 2nd and Nathan Outteridge, skipper and Ayden Menzies, wing trimmer on Team Japan who finished 3rd. Next leg is in San Francisco on the 2nd & 3rd of May

Social Lunchtime Cruise

The Sailing Club’s luncheon and social cruise is on Sunday 8th of March. Lunch will be at Gwandalan Bowling Club at 1pm. You can go by water (sail or power) or by road. Colin Cain will be taking the club’s power boat, the “Minder” to ferry yacht sailors ashore at the Bowling Club and is happy to take some extra passengers. Please contact Lyn McAllister on 0428 416 660, as we would like to confirm numbers for lunch. I believe most people going by boat will leave around 11.30am.

Friday 13th

Our resident Chef, and club captain Steff, is organising a get together after sailing on Friday 13th of March at the sailing club.  He will be preparing slow cooked Mediterranean Lamb with trimmings on hot dinner rolls.  BYO drinks and $2 donation for food. The prizes for the twilight race will be awarded at the Sailing Club not RSL that evening, so please come along and join us.

Sabot Coaching & Wangi Regatta

Our club will be hosting a Sabot Coaching Day on Saturday 14 March and then on the Sunday we will.be holding our annual Youth Regatta. Scott Day as Junior club captain will be running the events with the assistance of the junior parents. I believe plans are well in hand, however if you are available to assist on the Sunday give Scott a call on 0414 689 091 in case he needs further assistance.

Ladies Day

Just a reminder Ladies Day has been rescheduled to Sunday 22 of March. Please don’t think that girls have to skipper for the whole race, it’s more about giving them a go on the helm, even if it’s only for a short time and will obviously depend on the conditions. There will be prizes drawn out of a hat back at the sailing club after the race along with food and BYO drinks. This social event is also a fundraiser for Ovarian Cancer Research, so please support it and get your entry in on line.

She Sails

Australian Sailing has a developed a very successful program (She Sails), focusing on getting women involved is sailing. As a result, LMYC at Belmont will be running a number of sailing courses between Monday 30 March and Thursday 2 April. These will be conducted in 6 identical 24 foot keel boats on loan from NCYC.

The program is being tailored to accommodate all levels and will include:

  • Sessions for beginners just discovering sailing
  • Sessions designed to hone the skills of intermediate crew
  • More advanced sessions targeted at lady sailors who are wanting to expand their role on the boat & become more familiar with spinnakers & racing strategy.

Australian Sailing (AS) accredited instructors from NCYC will deliver a quality experience & will ensure that all participants feel safe & engaged. After each course, participants will be encouraged to debrief over a glass of bubbles in the club.

Registration & details of the full program are here:
