Commodore’s Call June 2021

Summer Presentation Night

The Sailing Club’s Summer Presentation Night was held on Saturday 22nd of May and was a huge success with 85 people attending. Special guests included the Mayor of Lake Macquarie, the Commodores of both LMYC & RMYC & the NSW state manager of Australian Sailing and local SailGP sailor Ayden Menzies.

The meal was good, speeches were brief, and everyone had a great night.

Big thanks to all those that helped set up and organise behind the scenes.

In addition to the yacht sailors, all the junior prize winners and their parents were invited to attend and have their trophies represented to them by Ayden in front everyone, which was very well received.

Congratulations to all the winners and to the rest of the sailors that pushed the winners all the way, as the standard of racing at Wangi seems to increase every year, which may explain why the Wangi Club won the RKR Teams trophy again for the 3rd year in a row.

Special congratulations to our Club Person of the Year and of course the Club Mongrel of the Year

Club Person of the Year

This person sailed with Denis Gilbert for a while & survived, even did a season on Yes Chef and only just survived. He has since moved on and joined the more luxurious champagne swilling crew on Ruffians and d’Artagnan.  Apart from this, he has been a Board member, treasurer and finance officer of the club for 7 or 8 years, which might explain his new waterfront house.

He is always one of the first to put his hand up to help when we hold regattas. Most importantly, he has contacts in the wine industry, resulting in the club getting wine at mate’s rates.

Congratulations      Steve Taylor

Club Mongrel of the Year

This person is a real Captain Bligh yelling screaming, so much so that the crew need earmuffs. A bit of an excitable fella, more like a Dr Jeckle & Mr Hyde. You can tell he came up through the ranks sailing a single-handed dinghy and unfortunately the transition to yachts with crews on board is still very much work in progress. He recently did the Port Stephens regatta in his boat but forgot to organise to bring it back in time for the club race the following week. No wonder they call him “Crackers”

Congratulations:                 Peter Horne

Sabot Regatta

With the support of Origin Energy, we hosted a regatta for Sabots last Sunday. The weather was quite windy and cold, however we had 24 boats brave the conditions. A big thanks to Rebecca Abbott who did most of the behind the scene work prior to the regatta and to all the other Wangi parents who helped out on the day to make it a real success.

Good luck to all the Wangi kids heading to Townsville in July for the Sabot Nationals

Winter Yacht Racing

Winter Racing is well under way with 3 races completed in the Achinar and 2 so far in the Commodores Cup.  Last Saturday in particular, was pretty tough, with 30 knot gusts coming through from the SW. Lots of reefed sails, lots of round ups, but not too many spinnakers for obvious reasons.

Winter racing typically is about too much wind or not enough wind, however if you average that out the statisticians would say it is perfect.

Help Required

We are currently looking for one or two people that could spend a little time of Saturday afternoons in the comfort of the clubhouse, to help start and finish the races. No computer skills are required. Please contact Phil Mayo if you can assist.

Winter Solstice Dinner

The club will be holding its annual winter solstice dinner on Saturday 19 June upstairs at the Sailing Club. The evening will commence at 6.30pm and people are asked to bring a dish to share, along with your own drinks. Come along and enjoy the evening, however please contact Lyn McAllister to let her know numbers.

Float Your Boat

The annual “Float Your Boat Parade” is in again this year on Friday 18 June. The spectacular parade of colorfully lit boats, in all sorts of images, leaves Marmong Cove at 6pm and makes its way down the western shore of the lake finishing at the Wangi RSL. In the past it has been truly amazing and well worth seeing.

AGM

Just a heads up that the Sailing Club’s AGM will be held on Sunday 18 July 2021. It will be held upstairs in the Wangi Sailing commencing at 10am. Further details will be forwarded soon.

Next Monthly Meeting Thursday 10th June in the clubhouse at 7pm
