Commodore’s Call

July 2020

Winter Yacht Racing

Winter racing is now well underway for yacht sailors in both the Commodore’s Cup and Achinar series with healthy numbers. It is pleasing to see a number of new boats in the fleet as well.

Model Yacht Sailing

The club has agreed to run some informal model yacht sailing over the next few months with a view to starting a model yacht racing series later in the year. This has been instantly successful, with 11 boats on the water last Saturday. The boat of choice is a DK650 which is an extremely popular boat world-wide, as they are a very modern design incorporating carbon fibre and are very affordable at a price of around $250.  Further inquiries should be directed to Phil Mayo (0420 855 948).

New WASC Constitution

The draft of the new constitution has now been circulated to members for review. The intention is that this document will be voted upon at the club’s AGM later this month. Big thanks to Diane Crosdale, Denis Gilbert and Steve Churches for their assistance in developing this document.

Sailor’s Meeting 19 July

The annual WASC Sailor’s meeting is where sailors have the opportunity to make suggestions for improvements to the club racing through changes to the program, courses, NOR or SI’s. This year’s meeting has been rescheduled to Sunday 19 July at 10am in the auditorium of the Wangi RSL Club due to continuing COVID-19 restrictions.

WASC Annual General Meeting 26 July

The club’s AGM has been rescheduled to Sunday 26 July at 10am. This will also be held in the auditorium of the Wangi RSL Club due to continuing COVID-19 restrictions. This is where members elect office bearers to run the club for the coming year. A list of positions to be filled will be circulated along with the agenda in a formal Notice of Meeting in the next few days.

Winter Retreat

I can now confirm that the Sailing Club’s Annual Winter Retreat will be held on Friday 21 August to Sunday 23 August at the Omadale Orchard Lodge near Moonan Flat. The lodge is set in a lovely rural setting on the banks of the Hunter River at the base of the Barrington Mountains. It accommodates up to 30 guests inside with a large communal kitchen and dining area along with indoor and outdoor wood fires. You can arrive Friday afternoon or evening, stay Friday and Saturday nights and depart around lunchtime on Sunday. The Sailing Club have been using this lodge for many years now as it is a great venue. The drive takes around 2 1/2 to 3 hours from Wangi to get to the lodge, with the last part of the journey travelling through some lovely country. Please contact Lyn McAllister (0428 416 660) to book a place.
